Back pain is one of the most common symptoms of COVID.

Back pain is not a stand-alone symptom of COVID-19, but it is one of the symptoms that is most frequently noted in early infection, at the height of infection, and also post infection.

Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic there has been an uprise in patients experiencing back pain. COVID-19, as we know, is a respiratory infection that causes symptoms of varying intensity including; fever, cough, headaches, body pain, and fatigue, and many other symptoms. Based on research currently in progress and physician’s observations, one of the most common types of body pain reported is back pain.

Back pain is not a stand-alone symptom of COVID-19, but it is one of the symptoms that is most frequently noted in early infection, at the height of infection, and also post infection. Physical Therapists are noticing an influx of patients who have recently recovered from COVID-19 seeking treatment for their back pain.

There are different types of back pain associated with COVID-19, including:

  • Back pain caused by the body’s inflammatory response to the infection

  • Back pain caused by the body’s inflammatory response to the COVID-19 vaccine

  • Back pain caused by patients spending an extended period of time in bed causing muscle issues

  • Back pain caused by patients being less active during their recovery period

It is also important to note that because many people have experienced drastic lifestyle changes, such as working from home versus traveling to the office every day, activity and fitness levels have also decreased significantly in many patients.
