Massage Therapy- How Much is Too Much?
Written by Sarrica PT’s Licensed Massage Therapist, Anthony Giannone
As a Massage Therapist the most asked question by far is "How often should I receive a Massage?"
There are many variables that can lead you to an answer. The answer depends on ones physical needs, pain levels, stress levels, emotional needs & of course the budget.
Let’s break down the variables…
Pain Management:
If your goal is decrease pain in a chronic state, 2 times a week is recommended. Future sessions will be dictated by pain levels changing. If pain levels decrease and the client is experiencing more pain improved day's in-between sessions, then you book session less frequently.
Stress Relief:
Stress management is just as important to your health as diet and exercise. High levels of stress can practically undo any progress at the gym or with eating healthy. Massage will lower stress levels and keep them low. With stress levels at bay the body's systems will work in harmony and give the body a better chance to recover and heal.
Athletic Performance/ Recovery:
If a client is training for an event/competition, they may want to schedule a bit more often than usual. Weekly or bi weekly session will maintain form leading up to the event. Serious athletes whose livelihoods depend on athletic performance would need 2 to 3 times a week to stay in peak performance. Massage for a pro or collegiate athlete will help the body combat punishment sustained while engaging in their sport.
There are 2 types of massage popular with athletes. Pre & Post Event Sport Massage. Pre event massage is designed to warm up the muscles and get them ready to perform. This involves a stimulating approach which will wake up muscle fibers rather than relax them. Post event on the other hand takes place after the client has finished a sport or event and the approach is slow and blood flow focused to help recover and lessen muscle soreness.
The Budget:
If your goals put you in a multiple massage per week category it can add up. Exploring shorter more focus sessions may be more affordable. Most facilities offer packages that cut a percentage per session. A person can put away for their health as well. Saving for vacations and clothes is a common practice. Health is important enough to invest in.
