What to Expect When Getting a Massage (and Insider Secrets)

Written by Anthony Giannone, Licensed Massage Therapist at Sarrica Physical Therapy

Massage therapy is a wonderful form of relaxation, recovery and healing on both the emotional & physical levels. Getting a massage on a normal basis has shown to have positive effects on our body. When we decide to lie on the table there is more to it than just checking out and enjoying the experience. I’m going to talk about what to expect when getting a massage.

Before you arrive at the spa or clinic:

  • Being open minded about the type of massage you will have is important. If you are unsure about which massage therapy you need, or a focused on a certain ‘type’ it may result in anxiety which may be present during the session. Speak to your massage therapist about the reason for your visit, and/or any symptoms you may be having so they can treat you better.

  • Be sure not to eat right before you arrive. Give yourself enough time to digest a meal before your session.

  • Please be on time, which means be early!! Being early will allow you to settle in and relax. If you arrive frantically it will be difficult to relax your body.

Once you arrive:

  • Communicate with your MT (Massage Therapist). Have a conversation on what is to be expected during the session.

  • Inform the Massage Therapist on any allergies to oils or scents or even if your skin is naturally sensitive.

  • Take off as much clothing you are comfortable with, if you feel more comfortable being fully clothed then inform the Massage Therapist and be sure to have loose fitting clothes to allow access for areas to be worked on.

  • Talk about pressure and what you can tolerate.

  • Any surgeries or injuries should be discussed so the Massage Therapist can adjust the session to your needs.

  • The MT may like to talk during the session, if this is something that will distract you then make that clear before the session begins.

  • If you like a certain type of music to help relax you then you should inform the MT.

During the session:

  • Once you’re on the table make sure your environment is suitable to your liking. Is temperature comfortable, is the music volume too low or high, is the lighting too bright or too dimmed? Most facilities can adjust these settings so don’t feel like you’re being troublesome.

  • Be sure to maintain breathing. People tend to hold their breath in while the Massage Therapist is working tender areas. When we hold our breath the muscles contract and massaging tight tense muscles is counterproductive. Breathing will facilitate relaxation and help during the intense moments.

  • If the pressure or pace is too much or too little make sure the Massage Therapist knows and will make adjustments.

Conclusion & Beyond:

  • At the end of the session your Massage Therapist should thank you for the session and give you time alone to get changed.

  • DO NOT GET UP QUICKLY. Take 1 to 2 minutes to lay on the table with your eyes open to allow yourself to get re-acclimated to the room. Getting up too quickly can result in dizziness which increases the chances of a fall.

  • Once you’re up and walking, drinking plenty of water for the remainder of the day or evening is imperative.

  • Set yourself up for future sessions if you connected with your Massage Therapist. Massage Therapy has its greatest benefit over time. The therapeutic effects of massage are cumulative, so the more massage you receive the better your body will feel overall.
