How Fascial Restrictions Could be Causing Your Pain

Myofascial release therapy Brooklyn NY

What is Fascia?

Fascia is a tough, continuous web of connective tissue that runs from the top of our head and all throughout our body to the tips of our fingers and toes. Think of our fascial system as the enveloping casing that provides structure and support to all components of our body. Aside from holding our bones, muscles, vessels, spinal cord and internal organs together, fascia acts as a shock absorber and plays a role within our immune system.

What are Fascial Restrictions?

Fascial Restrictions are areas in the body where the fascial tissue has shortened, dried up, and become firm. This is often caused by injury, trauma, pain guarding, inflammation, surgery, stress, or chronic postural abnormalities. These restrictions in the fascial system can cause pain and affect function if they compress the muscles, nerves, and other tissues it encases.

What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial (myo=muscle and fascia=connective tissue) Release is a form of therapy performed both by the therapist with hands-on techniques and by the patient with guided exercises. It aims at targeting the areas of tissue restriction in the body to rebalance extensibility or movement of the body as a whole. This form of therapy can be highly effective in treatment of TMJ dysfunction, Frozen Shoulder, Headaches, and most importantly chronic neck and back pain that could be caused by Scoliosis, Fibromyalgia, poor posture, or many other conditions.

How our Myofascial Release Treatment Can Benefit You!

Here at Sarrica PT & Wellness, we focus on a gentle, full-body style of myofascial release to reduce pain, stiffness, stress, tension and improve flexibility, posture, and total body wellness to help you improve your bodily awareness and feel more energized than ever before.

The therapist applies firm, gentle tension to the tissues in restricted areas for up to five minutes, depending on the tightness of the fascia. This skilled technique will allow the mucopolysaccharide gel in the body to become more fluid, which allows the collagen to elongate. Anti-inflammatory interleukins are also released, instantly promoting healing to damaged tissues.

If you think you, or someone you know could be interested in learning about how myofascial release or many other hands-on techniques that we offer could be beneficial, please reach out to us at (347) 560-6920.
